Celebrating Henry Fowler (1858-1933)

The 2008 Annual Colloquium of the Henry Sweet Society for the History of Linguistic Ideas will take place on March 31st, 2008, at the University of Nottingham. Since this is a year in which the international ICHOLS conference is taking place (Potsdam, 2008), the colloquium is a one-day event only.

2008 is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Henry Fowler, author of Fowler’s Modern English Usage, published in 1926 and still influential today. To mark the occasion, we are delighted to announce a plenary lecture by Professor Ingrid Tieken-Boon van Ostade (University of Leiden) on:

Henry Fowler and the birth of the usage guide

Professor Tieken-Boon van Ostade heads a major project on The codifiers and the English language: Tracing the norms of Standard English at the University of Leiden.

Call for Papers

It is hoped to have a panel of papers on prescriptivism, but proposals for papers on any aspect of the history of linguistic thought are, as ever, also welcome. Deadline for proposals is January 11th, 2008. Please send abstracts (max. 300 words) to: nicola.mclelland@nottingham.ac.uk (Department of German, University of Nottingham, NG7 2RD).

Registration

A registration form will be circulated to all members of the Henry Sweet Society via email in due course. If you would like to receive a registration form and are not a member of the society or do not have email access, please contact Nicola McLelland.
