Membership of the Society is open to all persons engaged in scholarly study and research appropriate to the Society's aims; associate membership is open to undergraduates and to graduate students of not more than five years' standing since registration.

The subscription year begins on 1 January. Members joining later will receive publications for that year.

Details of new members are published in the Bulletin. It would therefore be very helpful if applicants could provide the following information, for inclusion (where appropriate) in the next issue:

    1. Full name, title (Prof./Dr/Ms/etc.), degrees, and address to which correspondence should be sent;
    2. Name of employing institution (if any), and address if different from (1) above;
    3. Bibliographical details of their publications, including forthcoming articles or books, relevant to the interests of the Society;
    4. Interests in general (teaching or research) related to the aims of the Society.

News of Subcriptions:
Paying your subscription by PayPal

    Members outside the U.K. have often had trouble paying their subscriptions in the past because of ruinous bank charges. You can now avoid bank charges by paying your Henry Sweet Society subscription by PayPal (in effect, by e-mail). If you have not used PayPal before, you might like to look at the website http://www.paypal.com. It costs nothing to register, and is quite straightforward to use, though it takes a few minutes to get started. All you need is an e-mail address and a credit or debit card.

    How to make your payment using PayPal:
    Please follow the instructions at the PayPal
    website, http://www.paypal.com, and send your subscription of 15 pounds to nicola.mclelland@nottingham.ac.uk

    Points to remember:
    • In the Notes section of your message, be sure to state clearly that the payment is a subscription to the Henry Sweet Society. Cite the year for which you are paying, and include your full name and full contact details;
    • Under Payment type, select Service (N.B. If you select Quasi-Cash, your bank may charge interest, as if it were a cash withdrawal on your credit card);
    • If you get a message that says 'Cookies are disabled', this usually means your computer's security level is set too high to allow PayPal to store a cookie (a small text file) on your computer. To change the security level, go to the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, and select Internet Options, then Privacy. Under Privacy, slide the bar all the way down to Accept all cookies. After you have made your payment, you will probably want to move the bar back again to a higher level of security.

    Is it safe?

    PayPal received some bad press a few years ago, but seems to be working much better now it is owned by e-Bay. Please remember, however, that you use the service at your own risk. Receipt of your payment will be acknowledged by e-mail, so you know it has reached the Treasurer safely.
